The new phenomenon happening around me is
Fasting, when I call someone to have tea or snack, they say fasting and
then I realize its the month of Ramzan. My close pals know that I'm more of a
logical person than religious and my mom thinks I'm a critic of religion.Fasting
is there in every religion that I know but then the protocol is
different.According to hindu philosophy(hinduism is more of a way of living
than a religion),we have the liberty to choose any day for fasting relative to
the auspicious day of the favourite deity. And in Islam, there is one whole month
of Ramadan, and so are different protocols of fasting in all religions.I read
that Lord Buddha thought that desire was the root cause of evil, and if he
stopped eating he could end desire and gain liberation from suffering. As the
story goes, "he ate only a grain of rice and a sesame seed per day. Over
time he got so thin that he could touch his spine by pressing on his stomach.
He no longer had the strength to meditate. He realized that he would die before
he understood his mind; further, that desire does not end by force. At that
point a young herds maid offered him a meal of milk porridge which he accepted.
He regained his strength, renewed his meditation, and realized Buddhahood. So
by quitting fasting, and eating in moderation, he realized the central tenet of
Buddhist practice, moderation."Not that I'm against fasting, long back
while on a discussion with few of my friends about fasting,"A fan which
runs everyday for a week continously, will not last long than the fan which is
turned off for a day in a week, the same way if our digestive system too needs a
break often for a healthy life" and this is the science behind fasting
said my friend and I still find that a reasonable explanation.I too fast on the
days my mom says,I control my hunger with great difficulty, and look forward to
hog for dinner but my tummy feels full with 3,4 bites and thats where my desire
to hog gets a setback and thats when i realize that fasting also hints at
desire.Fasting really needs determination, and the intensity of determination
showed on fasting if diverted to achieving our goals then nothing is
impossible. The one who can fast regularly has the power to achieve his goal and
this is what fasting is,I would want to believe.
